Getting Out of the Decision Tunnel (and on to your path)

Are you in a decision maze or a decision tunnel?

Maze: this where all the ‘what you want and what you think you should want’ exists. This is where you have loads of ideas and desires and things you could do and feel overwhelmed by making a decision. You get hung up on what the right decision is. This is where the path is not clear. You’ve lost sight of your North Star (alignment).

Tunnel: this is where it is clear what the next decision and action is - you can see it. However, you keep staring at it, mulling it over, and avoiding it. This is where the path is clear but the what if’s are loud. You’ve lost access to your self-trust.

Today, we’re going to talk about the Decision Tunnel (next week I’ll explore the Decision Maze with you).

Most of the time with the Decision Tunnel, what's in your way, is not that you don't know what to do, it's that you won't let yourself do it.

That decision you need to make.

That conversation you need to have.

That action that you know is the next one to take.

It has been gnawing at you. You've already played out some version of it in your mind.

You know what to do/say/be.

But there is a whole bunch of discomfort for you in that decision/conversation/action.

There could be conflict. Someone's feelings could be hurt. It might not be the right or perfect thing. What if it pisses someone off? What if you can't do it? What if you fail?

Lots of fears that feel like truths.

That is part of the toxic status quo leadership conditioning. The people pleasing. The doubting yourself. The what ifs. The fraud complex. The who am I.

To add range to your version of leadership, you will have to own that you know what to do. And to own that you know what to do, you will need to trust yourself.

Trust that however it goes, you can handle it.

The above is something many of my clients work through. It is not uncommon for them to discover that they do know what to do, they simply needed someone to ask them questions that brought them to what they already knew and were not trusting.

We work on identifying the conditioning that has them stuck in the tunnel, rewrite it and then make a roadmap to move the decision and necessary actions forward.

It’s the light bulb.

It’s The Big Oh! (some times followed by a duh)

The more practice you get at doing “the thing”, the more comfortable you become with conflict and making strong decisions and building your teams and running and growing your business/career/life.

You get out of the tunnel and on to YOUR path.
